Drawing on the terrible devastation in Japan, we imagined the school building had been flattened. What would we do? We talked about the food and water we could salvage and materials needed to make a shelter. We found high ground, divided into 3 groups and built shelters. They had to have a wall and roof, to make them protected from the elements. We had fire, marshmallows, biscuits and Marcus (our volunteer from the Cameroon) made popcorn. In all 6 shelters were constructed, all having their different merits. I showed the first group the basics of firemaking using a firedrill.
