Reception in the Paragon woods

This Wednesday, both Reception classes took turns in exploring the woods to the east of the front lawn. We investigated different smelling leaves, looked at the soil beneath our feet, climbed a bank, holding onto a rope and reached the Swainswick base camp. There we talked about the fire and then went onto make quick shelters from some tarps I had. We also practised using a storm shelter, as I told them of a survival story in Scotland. After this we gathered round the fire to cook marshmallows...nothing beats them!
The session afforded good opportunities for the children to look around, use all their senses, find their feet on the terrain, experience fire, practice working together making their shelters and following instructions. The teachers were able to make some observations of their students at work.
