6I- Rabbits...skinning and cooking

This week 6I had the opportunity to try their hand at skinning a rabbit or three and cooking the meat on a fire. The class came out to the Explorer shelter in 2 halves to send 90 minutes working with Barney and me. Whilst I worked on the rabbits, Barney introduced the craft of magic string which is really fun to learn and a useful thing to be able to do. Ethan was very keen to work with the rabbit, as I taught how them a little about rabbits...how to capture/ kill, when they came to this island etc. The anatomy lesson was enjoyed to, going through the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and whether it was a boy or girl. The photos below show some of the fun we had. (There were good hand washing facilities, anti bac stuff and warm water.)
Enjoying cooking
I think that the learning opportunities today were aplenty; from the biology and history of the rabbits, to the personal decision making whether or not to engage with something so "yucky," to the campfire cookery issues of how to cook meat safely. On the other hand so good fun learning a new craft, which involved a certain dextrality. On this point one particular student did very well.
No more rabbits for me until I learn how to turn their cuts into a furry waistcoat!

I've got the heart!
We also did some work with the draw knife, making some butter knives.
